Week 10

1-Day project brief

I aim to create a full illustration showing features of a journey connecting places with the motif of smoke. It will be an investigation to find the source of the smoke and the smoke will be the main feature of my composition with illustrations fitting around it.

To do this I will need to:
- Retrace my journey and gather more information about the buildings and streets to better communicate where the smoke travels.
- To practise perspective drawing of buildings and streets as these will be important in my composition.
- Research into 'smoke signals' to see if there are additional motifs or colours I can make relevant to my illustration.
-Look at techniques/medium to see how I will create smoke texture and contrast it with drawings of buildings/people.
-Work out composition for final image aiming to fit on A3 paper

Initial sketches

Final Image

I tried to use the pencil crayon colours to identify main features in the composition and plan a route from top to bottom. I used water and Quink ink to imply the smoke and add interesting effects.
I lost some of the intensity that I had in the previous sketches so should have tried more thumbnail variations to find the best way of creating a multiple image illustration.

Week 9

Applying Colour schemes

I got the image of the cup from 'The Magpie's Treasure' by Kate Slater, she uses collage for her illustrations so the colours are bold and easily distinguished which makes them easier to practise colour schemes with. I think the pink and purple provide an interesting alternative but might make the object hard to identify.

This was another image from 'The Magpie's Treasure' I think this colour scheme is less dramatic than the original but I like the combination of pinks and black next to each other.

This image was taken from 'The Art of Howl's Moving Castle' by Hayao Miyazaki.
Where I had been focusing more on flat colour and pattern with Kate Slater's imagery I applied the colours to a more realistic image of a house. This created quite a surreal image which needs the original to be understood. Meaning that this colour scheme might not be applicable when representing real life objects.

Week 8

Colour Practise

The combination of black and pink with richer yellow and fuchsia creates an oriental feel.
Although I matched some of the colours on the bag I drew from effectively I should've better planned where my colours went as using yellow acrylic over the minty green colour dulled it where the colours on the bag were quite vibrant. For doing work with acrylic I will take this into account and spend more time going over colours to make them more opaque.

Week 7

Lettering in perspective

Extra Perspective

One point perspective practise.

Week 5

 Car drawing on location

This was hard to draw on location and the drawings looked different later on. The drawing using a perspective box was easier.

The shape of the mini was relatively easy to fit into the box so I will practise this method with different viewpoints.

Week 4

Box drawings in perspective

I found this difficult and struggle with angular forms, I will try using guidelines in the future as the boxes look like they are leaning forward.
